I’m a big fan of simple (see: Simple Meals). So when it comes to doing anything, from cooking to even art I’m a bit of a minimalist. It makes sense, then, that I’m attracted to really simple workouts too.
I was on my way to run at the track today, which is usually my go-to for cardio and stress release, when I saw that the track was occupied. I was already dressed to work out, so I didn’t want to waste it (am I the only one who thinks this way?). I texted my fitness-loving brother Ken to see if he had a jump rope.
I haven’t jumped rope in years and let me tell you, it’s a freaking workout! I don’t know why I stayed away for so long. You can basically do it anywhere and all you need is the rope. So simple!
At first I kept smacking myself all on my arms and legs, but overall it was like getting back on a bike– it was pretty easy to find a good rhythm again. Not to mention it took me right back to my double-dutch days in elementary school (yes, I was in a double-dutch club. and sign language club. and Young Astronauts club. …we won’t even mention the unofficial, but very real, “don’t-step-on-the-clovers” club).
By the time I was finished, I could definitely feel it, and was more worn-out than I’ve been with running in a long time. It’s nice to switch it up, and it’s seriously a total body workout. While I was jumping, it actually reminded a girl I went to college with who was on a jumping rope team and I remember she was ripped! Now I totally understand why.
I’ll be skipping rope a lot more now that I’ve rediscovered it, especially on the days when I either can’t make it out to the track or are feeling too lazy to get my butt out there but still need to burn off some energy.

When’s the last time you jumped rope? Are there any other simple workouts that you’re particularly fond of? (I like swimming and hiking, because they feel more like fun than working out)
